Insurance License Renewal: CE Requirements by State
Insurance license renewal is not optional — letting your license lapse means you cannot legally sell insurance, and restoring it often costs more than timely renewal. Most states require continuing education (CE) as part of the renewal process, with hours ranging from 15 to 48 hours per renewal cycle.
This guide covers renewal requirements for all 51 states in our database — renewal cycles, CE hours, ethics requirements, and fees. All data is pulled from our verified state databases.

Tips for Staying Current
- Track your renewal date. Set calendar reminders 90 days before expiration. Missing your renewal deadline can result in license suspension and the inability to sell or service policies.
- Spread CE over the renewal period. Do not leave all your CE hours for the last month. Taking courses throughout the renewal cycle makes it manageable and keeps you learning regularly.
- Use online CE providers. Most states accept online CE courses, which offer flexibility to complete hours at your own pace. Many carriers also offer free CE to their appointed producers.
- Check for carryover rules. Some states allow you to carry over excess CE hours into the next renewal period. Check your state's rules before losing credit for extra hours.
- Multi-state producers. If you hold licenses in multiple states, you may need to meet CE requirements in each state. Some states have reciprocal CE agreements — check with your DOI.
- Keep completion certificates. Save all CE certificates for at least one full renewal cycle. States may audit your CE compliance.
