Background Check
Minnesota requires fingerprint-based criminal background checks for all resident producer license applicants. Fingerprints are submitted to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI. If you take the exam at a PSI test center in Minnesota, fingerprints are taken electronically at the test center after passing. Alternatively, fingerprints can be taken at a local police station.

Minnesota participates in NIPR and has reciprocity arrangements with most states. Non-resident producers with active home state licenses can obtain Minnesota licenses without additional exams. Non-residents are exempt from MN CE requirements if compliant in home state.

Unique to Minnesota: Minnesota has an unusually long 36-month exam score validity period, compared to 12 months in most states. The state also charges a separate 'technology fee' on top of application and renewal fees. Minnesota requires fingerprinting at the PSI test center after passing the exam.
