Insurance Producer
Michigan licenses insurance producers with lines of authority including Life, Accident and Health, Property, Casualty, and Personal Lines. Each single line requires 20 hours of pre-licensing education; combined/dual lines require 40 hours. Exams are administered by PSI Services. Michigan uses variable passing scores by exam type (72%-76%) rather than a standard 70%. Effective June 10, 2025, PSI no longer offers remote proctoring for Michigan exams.

After obtaining your license, you must be appointed by at least one insurance company to sell their products. The carrier files the appointment with DIFS.
Appointment fee: Paid by carrier
Michigan participates in NIPR for non-resident licensing. Non-resident producers are exempt from Michigan CE requirements if they complete CE in their home state and remain in good standing.
Additional requirements: Must hold active license in good standing in home state. No fingerprinting required. Non-residents exempt from MI CE.

Ethics Hours
3 hours (included in CE total)
Resident producers must earn 24 credits of state-approved CE every 2 years, with a minimum of 3 credits in ethics coursework. License terms are based on the first day of the licensee's birth month every 2 years. Even birth year = even renewal year, odd birth year = odd renewal year. Non-resident producers are exempt from Michigan CE requirements if they have completed CE in their home state and remain in good standing.
Regulatory Board
Unique to Michigan: Michigan is one of the most affordable states for insurance licensing with just $15 application fee, $41 exam fee, and no fingerprinting requirement ($56 total for one line). However, the state has higher-than-average passing scores (72%-76% depending on exam type vs. the standard 70% in most states). The discontinuation of remote proctoring in June 2025 means all exams must now be taken in person. Taking the exam before completing pre-licensing education will invalidate results, unlike some states that allow this.
