Interstate licensing compacts are agreements between states that allow professionals licensed in one member state to practice in other member states — either through a multistate license, a compact privilege, or an expedited licensing pathway.
Each compact has its own rules, eligibility requirements, and member states. Some compacts (like the Nurse Licensure Compact) issue a single multistate license that works in all member states. Others (like the IMLC for physicians) expedite the process of obtaining individual state licenses.
Compact membership is voluntary — each state must pass legislation to join. The number of member states grows every year as more states recognize the benefits of professional mobility.
