Important: A license alone does not allow you to sell insurance
After obtaining your license, you must be appointed by at least one insurance company to sell their products. The carrier files the appointment with TDI.
Appointment fee: Paid by carrier
Texas participates in NIPR for non-resident producer licensing. Non-residents must hold active, good-standing General Lines license in their home state. Exam exemptions apply for non-residents with valid licenses in reciprocal states. Non-residents can substitute criminal history records or Certificate of Good Standing from home state in lieu of fingerprinting.
Additional requirements: Must hold active license in good standing in home state. Applications processed through Sircon or NIPR.

Regulatory Board
Unique to Texas: Texas is notable for having NO pre-licensing education requirement for General Lines licenses, making it one of the fastest states to get licensed if you can self-study and pass the exam. The state also discontinued online/remote proctored exams as of October 2024. Texas uses the 'General Lines' terminology and offers a unique temporary license path with a $150 fee and 40-hour employer-provided training requirement.
