Important: A license alone does not allow you to sell insurance
After obtaining your license, you must be appointed by at least one insurance company to sell their products. Florida licenses are perpetual as long as the agent remains appointed and meets CE requirements. If all appointments are terminated, the license becomes inactive.
Appointment fee: Paid by carrier
Florida participates in NIPR for non-resident producer licensing. Non-resident applicants must hold equivalent lines of authority in their home state. Non-resident adjusters have a $50 renewal fee. CE reciprocity is NOT available — non-residents must meet the same CE requirements as residents.
Additional requirements: Must hold active license in good standing in home state. CE reciprocity not available for non-residents.

Renewal Cycle
CE compliance cycle is every 2 years, tied to birth month
Renewal Fee
$0 (perpetual license, no renewal fee required)
CE Required
24 hours per cycle
Ethics Hours
3 hours (included in CE total)
Insurance agents licensed less than 6 years must complete 24 total hours every 2 years, including 4 hours of Law and Ethics in the license type held. After being licensed for 6 years, the CE requirement reduces to 20 total hours every 2 years. CE must be completed by the last day of the licensee's birth month every 2 years. Florida allows a maximum of 24 excess CE hours to carry over into the next reporting period. Licenses are perpetual provided CE requirements are met and the agent remains appointed. There is NO renewal fee or paperwork required beyond completing CE.
Regulatory Board
Unique to Florida: Florida stands out with its 200-hour pre-licensing education requirement for the 2-20 General Lines (P&C) license — among the highest in the nation. The state's perpetual license system with no renewal fee is unusual; agents simply complete CE and stay appointed. The 2-20 P&C license uniquely covers surety, health, and marine in addition to property and casualty. Florida also does NOT offer CE reciprocity for non-residents.
