Pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE). Format: 350 multiple-choice questions, computer-based. Passing score: 75.
Pass a clinical board examination. Colorado accepts: ADEX, CRDTS, SRTA, WREB.
Obtain current CPR/BLS certification, pass a criminal background check, Local Anesthesia Permit (optional, no additional fee with license), Interim Therapeutic Restoration (ITR) Permit (optional, no additional fee).

Colorado is one of the most progressive states for dental hygiene practice. No supervision is required and hygienists may own their own practices. Colorado was the first state to specifically authorize dental hygiene diagnosis as part of the scope of practice, without supervision. Local anesthesia requires a separate permit. Nitrous oxide currently requires direct dentist supervision (CODHA is advocating to move this to indirect supervision).

Colorado requires NO supervision for dental hygienists. Hygienists may own their own practices and perform dental hygiene diagnosis independently. Colorado was among the first states to allow this level of independence. Local anesthesia requires a Local Anesthesia Permit. Nitrous oxide requires direct dentist supervision. If a hygienist performs hygiene without a dentist present (indirect supervision), they must have a Local Anesthesia Permit if administering LA.
