MississippiLMFT License Requirements

Prerequisite Courses

Coursework in marriage and family therapy, human development, psychopathology, ethics, research, and clinical practicum

LMFTs must earn a master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a closely related field from a program accredited by COAMFTE (Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education) or a regionally accredited institution. Programs typically include clinical practicum hours in addition to didactic coursework.

Most states require the MFT National Examination administered by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB). The exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions covering clinical practice, assessment, and ethics. Some states also require a state-specific jurisprudence exam on local laws and regulations governing MFT practice.

Supervisor Qualifications

LMFT candidates must complete extensive post-degree supervised clinical experience before obtaining full licensure. Most states require between 2,000 and 4,000 hours of supervised clinical work, including a specified number of direct client contact hours. Supervision must be provided by a qualified LMFT supervisor or equivalent licensed professional.

Restricted Activities

• •Cannot practice outside scope of MFT training

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists are qualified to provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families. Scope of practice typically includes assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental and emotional disorders within the context of relationships and family systems. LMFTs may not prescribe medication or perform psychological testing in most jurisdictions.

Required CE Topics

Regulatory Board

LMFT licenses must be renewed on schedule with the state board. Most states require continuing education hours that include specific topics such as ethics, cultural competency, domestic violence awareness, and evidence-based practices in marriage and family therapy.

Reciprocity Requirements

• •Active LMFT license in good standing in another jurisdiction
• •Master's degree or higher in MFT or related field from an accredited institution
• •Passage of national MFT examination or equivalent
• •Completion of supervised experience requirements comparable to Mississippi
• •Submit endorsement/reciprocity application and fees
• •Pass background check

LMFT reciprocity allows out-of-state licensees to obtain licensure through endorsement. Requirements typically include verification of current licensure, equivalent education and supervised experience, and passing any state-specific jurisprudence exams. There is currently no national MFT compact, though efforts are underway in some jurisdictions.
