Transfer Details
Idaho offers license by endorsement for out-of-state social workers who meet equivalent requirements. ASWB exam scores are accepted from other states. Idaho is NOT currently a member of the Social Work Licensure Compact, though Idaho's Board of Social Work Examiners participated in the Technical Assistance Group that helped develop the compact legislation.
Additional Requirements for Transfer
The Social Work Licensure Compact allows eligible social workers to practice across member states. States not in the compact may offer license by endorsement for out-of-state applicants with equivalent credentials and experience.
Title Protection
VerifiedIdaho protects the titles LSW, LMSW, and LCSW. Using these titles without proper licensure is a violation of Idaho state law.
Telehealth Rules
Mostly verifiedInterstate Telehealth Not Allowed
Telehealth permitted within state. Idaho is not a member of the Social Work Licensure Compact; out-of-state providers generally need Idaho licensure to serve Idaho clients via telehealth.
Mandatory Reporting
VerifiedSocial Workers Are Mandatory Reporters
Licensed social workers in Idaho are mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse, neglect, and elder abuse. Failure to report can result in disciplinary action and criminal penalties.
Social work scope of practice includes title protection, telehealth regulations, and mandatory reporting obligations. Clinical social workers (LCSWs) can independently diagnose and treat mental health conditions in most states.
Idaho offers provisional intern licenses (LSW-I and LMSW-I) for candidates who have not yet passed the ASWB exam, allowing them to practice under supervision while preparing. Idaho transitioned from annual to biennial licensure renewal in October 2025. The LCSW requires 1,750 direct client contact hours out of 3,000 total -- higher than the typical 1,500 in many states. Additionally, supervisors must complete 15 hours of clinical supervisor training and have no disciplinary actions in the past 5 years. Idaho participated in developing the Social Work Compact model legislation but has not yet enacted it.
Idaho has three license levels: LSW (bachelor's), LMSW (master's), and LCSW (clinical).
Idaho also issues provisional licenses: LSW-I (Licensed Social Worker -- Intern) and LMSW-I for candidates who have not yet passed the ASWB exam.
LCSW requires 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience, including 1,750 hours of direct client contact.
LCSW supervisors must have 15 hours of clinical supervisor training before providing supervision.
At least 50% of LCSW clinical hours must be supervised by an LCSW.
Idaho transitioned to biennial licensure as of October 14, 2025; CE requirement updated to 30 hours per 24-month period.
Applicants can apply up to 2 quarters before graduation.
No carryover of excess CE hours to the next renewal period.
Idaho is not a member of the Social Work Licensure Compact.
