Additional Requirements for Transfer

Title Protection
VerifiedIllinois protects the titles LSW and LCSW. Using these titles without proper licensure is a violation of Illinois state law.
Telehealth Rules
Mostly verifiedInterstate Telehealth Not Allowed
Telehealth permitted within state. Illinois is not yet a member of the Social Work Licensure Compact (HB2473 introduced but not enacted). Out-of-state providers generally need Illinois licensure to serve Illinois clients via telehealth.
Mandatory Reporting
VerifiedSocial Workers Are Mandatory Reporters
Licensed social workers in Illinois are mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse, neglect, and elder abuse under the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act. Failure to report can result in disciplinary action and criminal penalties.
Social work scope of practice includes title protection, telehealth regulations, and mandatory reporting obligations. Clinical social workers (LCSWs) can independently diagnose and treat mental health conditions in most states.
Illinois is notable for eliminating the ASWB exam requirement for LSW licensure since January 1, 2022 -- making it one of the few states where you can obtain a social work license without passing an ASWB exam. Illinois also offers a unique Exam Alternative pathway to LCSW: instead of passing the Clinical exam, candidates can complete 3,000 additional supervised hours (on top of the 3,000 clinical hours), but only if they previously attempted the exam after January 1, 2019. Illinois uses the same LSW title for both BSW and MSW holders. The IDFPR launched the new CORE platform in February 2026 replacing the legacy application system.
Illinois does NOT require ASWB exam for LSW -- this is significant and unusual among states. The exam requirement was eliminated effective January 1, 2022.
Illinois uses LSW as a single title for both BSW and MSW holders.
MSW graduates can obtain an LSW without any exam or experience.
BSW holders need 3 years supervised social work practice for LSW.
Exam Alternative for LCSW: 3,000 additional supervised hours instead of Clinical exam (only if exam attempted after Jan 1, 2019).
Beginning January 1, 2026, Exam Alternative applicants must hold an LSW or School Social Worker license while completing hours.
LCSW renewal requires a one-time lifetime clinical supervision training of 6 hours.
IDFPR launched the new CORE modernized regulatory platform in February 2026 for all first-time applicants.
Doctoral degree holders only need 2,000 hours of supervised clinical experience (vs. 3,000 for master's).
Illinois has not yet enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact but introduced HB2473 in February 2025.
LSW can practice for 1 year before needing to meet all requirements if holding CSWE degree.
1 hour in Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias required once every 3 renewal periods.
