Special Notes

Kansas uniquely allows candidates to take the written exam after just 1,000 hours (two-thirds of the requirement) and the practical exam at 1,420 hours. Instead of continuing education, Kansas requires a 20-question written renewal examination at each biennial renewal -- pass with 75% or you cannot renew. Kansas also has a separate Board of Barbering from the Board of Cosmetology.

Written exam can be taken after 1,000 hours; practical exam after 1,420 hours -- both before completing the full 1,500 hours

Kansas requires a written renewal examination (20 questions) at each biennial renewal instead of continuing education

The Kansas Board of Cosmetology also regulates body art and tanning professions

Licenses expired more than 6 months require reinstatement with a $100 penalty fee plus the written renewal exam
