NIC Barber Styling Theory Exam + Kansas Rules and Regulations Exam
Kansas requires three exams: the NIC Barber Styling Theory written exam, a practical examination, and a Kansas Rules and Regulations exam. A passing score of 80% or higher is required on each. The NIC written exam is computer-based and pre-registered by the Board through Prov testing company.

Barbershops must be separately licensed through the Kansas Board of Barbering. Both barbershops and chair leases must be renewed annually.
Kansas is one of the few states that requires three separate exams for barber licensure: the NIC written theory exam, a practical exam, and a state-specific Kansas Rules and Regulations exam. The 80% passing score requirement is also higher than the typical 70% threshold in most states. Kansas also maintains completely separate boards for barbering and cosmetology with no crossover provisions.
