Licensed social workers in Georgia are mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse, neglect, and elder abuse. Failure to report can result in disciplinary action and criminal penalties.
Social work scope of practice includes title protection, telehealth regulations, and mandatory reporting obligations. Clinical social workers (LCSWs) can independently diagnose and treat mental health conditions in most states.
Georgia does not offer a bachelor's-level license, making the LMSW (requiring an MSW) the entry-level credential. The board is a composite board that also oversees professional counselors and marriage & family therapists. Georgia limits asynchronous online CE to a maximum of 10 hours out of the 35 required, and all 5 ethics hours must be live/synchronous. Post-MSW graduates may practice for up to 1 year while preparing for the licensing exam. LMSW licensees must practice under both direction and supervision for the first 2 years.
