Easiest States to Get a Vet Tech License (2026): Ranked
When evaluating which states are "easiest" for vet tech licensing, two factors matter most: exam requirements and fee burden. Out of 51 states we track, 51 require the VTNE and 8 require an additional state-level exam. States with fewer mandatory exams and lower fees rank highest for ease.
Our composite ease score weights exam burden most heavily — passing both the VTNE and a state exam is significantly more demanding than just one exam. Fees and continuing education hour requirements are weighted as secondary factors.

What "Easiest" Doesn't Mean
- Ease does not equal lower standards. All states require graduation from an AVMA-accredited program. The core education requirement is the same everywhere.
- Lower fees do not mean lower quality care. Licensing fees have no bearing on the quality of veterinary medicine practiced in a state.
- Check reciprocity before relocating. Getting licensed in an "easy" state and then transferring to a stricter state may still require additional exams or paperwork.
- Requirements change. State boards update exam requirements, fee schedules, and CE requirements regularly. Always verify current requirements directly with your state board before applying.
