Telehealth permitted within DC. DC has not enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact, so interstate telehealth requires licensure in both jurisdictions. Out-of-state practitioners serving DC residents must hold a DC license.
Mandatory Reporting

Licensed social workers in the District of Columbia are mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse, neglect, and elder abuse. Failure to report can result in disciplinary action and criminal penalties.
Social work scope of practice includes title protection, telehealth regulations, and mandatory reporting obligations. Clinical social workers (LCSWs) can independently diagnose and treat mental health conditions in most states.
DC has a unique four-tier system including both LISW (non-clinical independent, Advanced Generalist exam) and LICSW (clinical independent, Clinical exam). Applicants must hold an LGSW for at least 2 years before advancing. DC mandates that 6 hours of ethics CE be completed face-to-face (no online allowed) and requires 2 hours of LGBTQ training. DC has not joined the Social Work Licensure Compact.
DC has a four-tier licensing system: LSWA, LGSW, LISW, and LICSW.
LISW is a non-clinical independent license (Advanced Generalist exam); LICSW is the clinical independent license (Clinical exam).
