Prerequisite Education

Bachelor's degree from accredited institution

Licensed Clinical Social Workers must earn a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE (Council on Social Work Education) accredited program. Programs typically require 2 years of full-time study including field placement hours. Most states require a clinical concentration or specialization within the MSW program.

The ASWB Clinical exam is a 170-question, 4-hour computer-based exam administered by the Association of Social Work Boards. It covers assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, psychotherapy, and professional ethics. A scaled passing score is required. Some states also require a jurisprudence exam covering state-specific social work laws and regulations.

Supervisor Qualifications

LCSW with at least 2 years post-licensure experience

After earning an MSW, aspiring LCSWs must complete a period of supervised clinical experience under an approved supervisor (typically an LCSW with several years of experience). Requirements typically range from 2,000 to 4,000 hours of supervised practice, with a subset of direct client contact hours. Many states offer an interim or associate-level license (LSW, LMSW, CSW) during this period.

LCSWs are authorized to provide clinical social work services including psychotherapy, clinical assessment, diagnosis (DSM-5), treatment planning, and crisis intervention. Most states allow LCSWs to practice independently, accept insurance, and provide telehealth services. Scope of practice varies by state and may restrict certain activities.

Required CE Topics

Regulatory Board

LCSW licenses must be renewed on a regular cycle with the state board. Continuing education requirements typically include mandatory topics such as ethics, cultural competency, and suicide prevention. Some states accept online CE credits while others require a portion to be completed in-person.

Reciprocity Requirements

The Social Work Licensure Compact allows licensed social workers to practice across state lines in member states.
