Alternatives to Embalming

Colorado is transitioning from being the only state without funeral director licensing to full licensure by 2027. A provisional license path exists for practitioners already working in the state who lack formal mortuary science degrees.
Colorado passed HB24-173 in 2024, creating licensure for funeral directors, mortuary science practitioners, embalmers, cremationists, and natural reductionists. Licensing is required by January 1, 2027. This ended over 40 years without state licensing (requirement was sunsetted in 1983). The law was prompted by multiple funeral home scandals including the Return to Nature case involving 189 decomposing bodies.
All funeral homes must comply with the FTC Funeral Rule requiring price disclosure.
There is no interstate compact for funeral directors.
