Prerequisite Courses

Audiologists must earn a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA). Programs typically take 4 years post-baccalaureate and include extensive clinical practicum hours.

Many states require postgraduate supervised clinical experience as part of the audiology licensing process. This typically involves working under the supervision of a licensed audiologist who holds the CCC-A credential. The Clinical Fellowship (CF) experience ensures competency in clinical audiology practice.

The Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) is issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Some states require the CCC-A for licensure or accept it in lieu of other requirements such as the supervised clinical experience or state exam.

ASLP-IC (Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact) is ACTIVE. 37 jurisdictions as of 2025 (36 states + USVI). CompactConnect launched Sept 30, 2025. Covers both audiologists and SLPs. North Dakota has not enacted the compact.
