Program Requirements

Bachelor's degree plus 240 clock hours of didactic training in substance abuse education from accredited institutions or approved organizations

Education requirements for substance abuse counselors vary significantly by state. Certification Levels

Many states accept national certifications from the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) or the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC). Some states have their own certification exams. Tiered certification levels are common, with each level requiring additional education, supervised experience, and examination.

Supervision Hours

2,000 hours of supervised experience in substance abuse counseling plus 160 hours providing specific tasks with substance abuse clients

Supervisor Qualifications

Board-approved clinical supervisor registered with the Virginia Board of Counseling

Substance abuse counselor candidates must complete supervised clinical experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders. Requirements vary widely by state, typically ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 hours. Direct service hours (face-to-face client contact) are a required subset of total supervised hours.

Restricted Activities

Substance abuse counselors provide assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and case management for individuals with substance use disorders. Some states permit treatment of co-occurring mental health disorders at higher licensure levels. Counselors may not prescribe medication or provide services outside their defined scope.

Regulatory Board

Substance abuse counselor licenses must be renewed on schedule. Continuing education requirements typically include topics such as ethics, cultural competency, co-occurring disorders, evidence-based treatment practices, and pharmacology of addictive substances.
