Program Requirements

Associate degree plus 200 hours of SUD education and 200-hour practicum from CHEA-accredited institution

Education requirements for substance abuse counselors vary significantly by state. Some states accept a high school diploma with additional training, while others require an associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree. Many states have tiered licensing systems where higher education levels unlock broader scopes of practice and independent practice privileges.

Certification Levels

Many states accept national certifications from the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) or the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC). Some states have their own certification exams. Tiered certification levels are common, with each level requiring additional education, supervised experience, and examination.

2,000 hours of supervised experience in substance use disorder counseling

Supervisor Qualifications

Board-approved clinical supervisor with SUDC or higher credential

Substance abuse counselor candidates must complete supervised clinical experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders. Requirements vary widely by state, typically ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 hours. Direct service hours (face-to-face client contact) are a required subset of total supervised hours.

Restricted Activities

Substance abuse counselors provide assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and case management for individuals with substance use disorders. Some states permit treatment of co-occurring mental health disorders at higher licensure levels. Counselors may not prescribe medication or provide services outside their defined scope.

Required CE Topics

Regulatory Board

Substance abuse counselor licenses must be renewed on schedule. Continuing education requirements typically include topics such as ethics, cultural competency, co-occurring disorders, evidence-based treatment practices, and pharmacology of addictive substances.

The International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) facilitates reciprocity for substance abuse counselors across member states and jurisdictions.
