Education requirements for substance abuse counselors vary significantly by state. Substance abuse counselor candidates must complete supervised clinical experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders. Requirements vary widely by state, typically ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 hours. Direct service hours (face-to-face client contact) are a required subset of total supervised hours.

Restricted Activities

Substance abuse counselors provide assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and case management for individuals with substance use disorders. Some states permit treatment of co-occurring mental health disorders at higher licensure levels. Counselors may not prescribe medication or provide services outside their defined scope.
