NP licensing involves earning a graduate nursing degree, obtaining national board certification, and meeting state-specific practice authority and prescriptive authority requirements.
States grant one of three practice authority levels: Full Practice Authority (FPA) allows NPs to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe independently. Reduced Practice Authority requires a collaborative agreement. Restricted Practice Authority requires direct physician supervision.
NPs must obtain national board certification from either the AANP (American Association of Nurse Practitioners) or ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center). Certification must align with the NP's specialty track from their graduate program.
All states grant NPs some level of prescriptive authority, but controlled substance scheduling varies. Full Practice Authority states allow independent prescribing, while others may require collaborative agreements or physician oversight for controlled substances.
