Certification Details
New Jersey requires both MT-BC certification and state licensure. The state defines specific scope of practice and title protection.
The MT-BC (Music Therapist - Board Certified) credential is awarded by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) and is the nationally recognized professional certification for music therapists. To earn the MT-BC, candidates must complete an AMTA-approved education program, fulfill clinical training requirements (minimum 1,200 hours), and pass the CBMT board certification examination. The MT-BC must be maintained through continuing education (100 recertification credits per 5-year cycle) or re-examination.

The exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions with a scaled passing score determined through psychometric analysis. The exam is administered at Prometric testing centers nationwide. The Music Therapist Licensing Act was signed January 21, 2020 by Governor Phil Murphy.
Music therapy licensure is a growing area of state regulation. Currently about 15-16 states have enacted specific licensing or registration requirements for music therapists. In all states, the MT-BC (Music Therapist - Board Certified) credential from the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) serves as the nationally recognized professional standard. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) actively supports state licensure efforts.

Title Protection
New Jersey provides title protection for music therapists under the state practice act.
Music therapists use evidence-based music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. The scope of practice includes assessment of client needs through music-based and non-music evaluations, development of treatment plans, implementation of music therapy interventions (including improvisation, receptive music listening, songwriting, lyric analysis, and movement to music), documentation, and evaluation of treatment outcomes. Music therapists work in diverse settings including hospitals, psychiatric facilities, schools, hospice, rehabilitation centers, substance abuse programs, correctional facilities, and private practice.

Regulatory Board
Music therapist licenses must be renewed on schedule with the state licensing authority. State CE requirements typically range from 20-40 hours per renewal cycle and must include music therapy clinical practice topics. In addition to state requirements, the CBMT requires 100 recertification credits per 5-year cycle to maintain the MT-BC credential. CE activities may include attending AMTA conferences, completing approved courses, publishing research, presenting at professional conferences, and supervised clinical practice.

Reciprocity Requirements
Music therapy licensure reciprocity varies by state. Because the MT-BC is a nationally recognized credential, music therapists moving between states typically need to verify their CBMT certification, submit transcripts from their AMTA-approved program, and meet any state-specific requirements. There is currently no interstate compact for music therapy, though the national MT-BC credential facilitates portability. States with licensure may require additional documentation including background checks and verification of clinical training hours.
New Jersey's LPMT license falls under the Board of Creative Arts and Activities Therapies, which also covers art, dance/movement, and drama therapists. Regulations are still being written as of 2025.
The Music Therapist Licensing Act was signed January 21, 2020 by Governor Phil Murphy.
Draft regulations for the LPMT license are still being finalized; full implementation is ongoing. Music therapists may continue practicing with MT-BC during the transition.
