Mold licensing varies widely by state. Only about 11 states plus DC have specific mold licensing programs. In states with licensing, a key distinction exists between mold assessors/inspectors (who evaluate mold conditions) and mold remediators (who remove mold). Many states with licensing require separate licenses for each role and prohibit the same company from performing both assessment and remediation on a single project to prevent conflicts of interest.

In states with mold licensing, license renewal is typically annual or biennial with continuing education requirements ranging from 8-16 hours. In states without licensing, national certifications (ACAC, IICRC, MICRO) have their own renewal cycles and continuing education requirements. Maintaining current certifications and insurance is essential for credibility and compliance.
Virginia licenses mold professionals through the Board for Asbestos, Lead, and Home Inspectors under DPOR. Separate inspector and remediator licenses are required, with a conflict of interest prohibition.
Virginia does NOT have a traditional DPOR-issued mold license.
HB 1270 (effective July 1, 2024): Makes it a violation of the Virginia Consumer Protection Act to sell mold remediation services on residential dwellings WITHOUT holding IICRC mold remediation certification (or equivalent nationally recognized certification).
HB 2195 (2025): Directs DPOR to STUDY whether licensure of mold inspectors and remediators would benefit public health/safety. Report due November 1, 2025.
Requirement applies to REMEDIATORS only - no state license or certification required for mold INSPECTORS/ASSESSORS.
DPOR does not currently issue mold licenses. Costs reflect IICRC certification (~$300-$700 for training + exam), not a state license fee.
