Fire alarm technician education typically includes a high school diploma or GED, followed by completion of an approved fire alarm training program. Many technicians gain experience through apprenticeship programs, manufacturer training, or trade school programs. NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) offers tiered certification from Level I through Level IV based on experience and examination.

NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) is the most widely recognized certification body for fire alarm technicians in the United States. NICET Fire Alarm Systems certification is offered at four levels, with Level I covering basic installation and Level IV covering system design and project management.
