Required Coursework Areas

All states require a master’s degree in counseling or a related field. The number of required credit hours varies — some states require 48 semester hours while others require 60. CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) accreditation is increasingly required or preferred.

After completing a master’s degree, aspiring counselors must accumulate supervised clinical experience (typically 2,000–4,000 hours) before qualifying for full licensure.
