Prerequisite Courses

Audiologists must earn a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA). Programs typically take 4 years post-baccalaureate and include extensive clinical practicum hours.

Retake Policy

Praxis may be retaken after 28 days; no limit on number of attempts

The Praxis Examination in Audiology is administered by ETS and is required in most states. The exam covers audiologic assessment, intervention, and professional practice. A score of 162 is the typical passing threshold. Some states also require a separate state-specific exam.

Many states require postgraduate supervised clinical experience as part of the audiology licensing process. This typically involves working under the supervision of a licensed audiologist who holds the CCC-A credential. The Clinical Fellowship (CF) experience ensures competency in clinical audiology practice.

CCC-A Accepted in Lieu Of

The Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) is issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Some states require the CCC-A for licensure or accept it in lieu of other requirements such as the supervised clinical experience or state exam.

Audiology licenses must be renewed on schedule. Most states require continuing education hours covering topics such as ethics, audiology practice, hearing aid technology, and evidence-based assessment. Specific topic requirements vary by state.

Compact Details

ASLP-IC (Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact) is ACTIVE. 37 jurisdictions as of 2025 (36 states + USVI). CompactConnect launched Sept 30, 2025. Covers both audiologists and SLPs. New York has not enacted the compact.

The Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC) allows licensed audiologists to practice in other compact member states without obtaining additional licenses.
