OhioArt Therapist License Requirements

Art therapy education requirements include a master's degree in art therapy from a program approved by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) or an equivalent accredited program. Coursework typically covers art therapy theory and practice, psychology, human development, psychopathology, assessment, research methods, and ethics. Supervised clinical practicum experience of 1,000 to 1,500 hours is required, depending on the state and credentialing pathway. Post-master's supervised clinical hours must be completed under a qualified art therapist or licensed mental health professional.

The ATCB (Art Therapy Credentials Board) is the national credentialing body for art therapists. The ATR-BC (Art Therapist Registered, Board Certified) credential requires a master's degree in art therapy, completion of supervised clinical hours, and passing the ATCB board certification examination. Approximately 15-17 states have specific art therapy licensure requirements that typically build upon the ATR-BC credential. New York offers the unique LCAT (Licensed Creative Arts Therapist) credential. In states without dedicated art therapy licensure, the ATR-BC credential serves as the primary professional qualification.
