Advanced Certifications
ISA certification is the most widely recognized credential in the arboriculture industry. In Massachusetts, ISA certification is voluntary but strongly recommended and often required by municipalities for tree work permits. Regulatory Board
ISA Certified Arborists must earn 30 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every 3 years to maintain their credential. CEUs can be earned through conferences, workshops, college courses, and ISA-approved programs. Pesticide applicator licenses also require periodic renewal with continuing education. Failure to renew results in loss of credentials.
Massachusetts requires ISA Certified Arborist credentials for anyone performing work on public shade trees under MGL Chapter 87. This makes it one of few states mandating ISA certification by law.
Massachusetts does NOT have a general arborist licensing requirement. The MA Arborists Association explicitly states: 'In Massachusetts there is no licensing requirement for arborists.'
NARROW EXCEPTION: ISA certification may be required for certain municipal/public shade tree work, but this is NOT a general arborist license.
ISA Certified Arborist credential is strongly recommended by the MA Arborists Association but is not legally required for general commercial tree care.
A pesticide applicator license IS required for any chemical treatments on trees.
