Licensed social workers in Ohio are mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse, neglect, and elder abuse. Failure to report can result in disciplinary action and criminal penalties.
Social work scope of practice includes title protection, telehealth regulations, and mandatory reporting obligations. Clinical social workers (LCSWs) can independently diagnose and treat mental health conditions in most states.
Ohio uses LISW (Licensed Independent Social Worker) rather than LCSW. LSW does NOT require ASWB exam (eliminated 2016). Starting July 10, 2026: Clinical exam required for LISW (Advanced Generalist no longer accepted). LISW-S supervision designation. Requires 150 hours of supervision from an LISW-S. SWA: 15 CE hours; LSW/LISW: 30 CE hours. All CE may be home study. Compact member.
