Transfer Details
Colorado enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact (HB24-1002). Multistate licenses are expected to be available in 2026 once compact implementation is complete. License by endorsement is also available for practitioners from non-compact states. 5 years of independent practice in past 10 years may substitute for exam; bachelor's level not sufficient for endorsement.
Additional Requirements for Transfer
The Social Work Licensure Compact allows eligible social workers to practice across member states. States not in the compact may offer license by endorsement for out-of-state applicants with equivalent credentials and experience.

Title Protection
VerifiedColorado protects the titles LSW, LCSW, and SWC. Using these titles without proper licensure or registration is a violation of Colorado law under the Social Work Practice Act.
Telehealth Rules
VerifiedInterstate Telehealth Allowed
Telehealth permitted within state. Colorado is a member of the Social Work Licensure Compact, which will facilitate interstate telehealth practice once multistate licenses become available in 2026.
Mandatory Reporting
VerifiedSocial Workers Are Mandatory Reporters
Licensed social workers in Colorado are mandatory reporters of suspected child abuse, neglect, and elder abuse under Colorado law. Failure to report can result in disciplinary action and criminal penalties.
Social work scope of practice includes title protection, telehealth regulations, and mandatory reporting obligations. Clinical social workers (LCSWs) can independently diagnose and treat mental health conditions in most states.
Colorado requires only a master's or doctoral degree for any level of social work licensure -- there is no bachelor's-level license. The state uses a unique Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) model instead of traditional CE, requiring a self-assessment rubric and individualized learning plan. Colorado also requires a separate Jurisprudence Examination, and the LCSW supervision requirement of 3,360 hours is higher than the national norm of 3,000.
Colorado does not offer a bachelor's-level social work license; all licensure requires an MSW or DSW.
The Social Work Candidate (SWC) is a registration/permit, not a license, that allows graduates to accumulate supervised clinical hours toward LCSW.
Colorado requires a separate Jurisprudence Examination in addition to the ASWB exam.
Colorado uses a unique Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) model requiring self-assessment, a learning plan, and 40 Professional Development Hours.
Colorado enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact (HB24-1002).
LCSW requires 3,360 supervised hours with at least 1,680 direct client contact hours and 96 supervision hours -- slightly higher than the typical 3,000-hour requirement in most states.
Social Work Compact enacted and commission activated (April 2024) but NOT yet issuing multistate licenses as of March 2026.
