Michigan has limited or no reciprocity
Michigan does not have formal reciprocity agreements with any other state. The Electrical Administrative Board may evaluate out-of-state licenses on a case-by-case basis, but applicants must still pass the required Michigan exam.
These are the standard licensing steps in Michigan. As a licensed electrician from Ohio, you may already satisfy some of these requirements.
Register as an Apprentice Electrician with LARA; must be employed by a Master Electrician and Electrical Contractor
Enroll in a related technical instruction (RTI) program
Accumulate 8,000 hours AND 4 years as an electrical apprentice under supervision (1:1 ratio)
Apply to LARA for Journeyman exam preapproval (must be at least 20 years old)
Schedule and pass the PSI-administered journeyman exam ($100 exam fee; 80 questions, 2.5 hours, 75% passing, open-book)
Pay $40 license fee after passing exam and receive Journeyman Electrician license
Detailed fee breakdown not available.
Timeline varies based on your credentials, reciprocity eligibility, and Michigan's current processing times. Contact the state licensing board for current estimates.
