Education requirements for substance abuse counselors vary significantly by state. Certification Levels

Many states accept national certifications from the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) or the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC). Some states have their own certification exams. Tiered certification levels are common, with each level requiring additional education, supervised experience, and examination.

Supervision Hours

Clinical Work Experience: 6000/5000/4000/2000 hours by education level. On-The-Job Clinical Supervision: 300/250/200/100 hours respectively, each with minimum 10 hours per ADC domain.

Supervisor Qualifications

Board-approved clinical supervisor with CADC or higher credential

Substance abuse counselor candidates must complete supervised clinical experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders. Requirements vary widely by state, typically ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 hours. Direct service hours (face-to-face client contact) are a required subset of total supervised hours.

Restricted Activities

Substance abuse counselors provide assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and case management for individuals with substance use disorders.
