Radiologic Technologist
Radiologic technologist licensing typically requires graduation from a JRCERT-accredited program and ARRT certification. However, requirements vary significantly by state — some states license rad techs while others do not. Fluoroscopy permits, limited operator categories, and modality-specific certifications add additional complexity.

RT licensing involves completing an accredited program, passing the ARRT exam, and meeting state-specific requirements for scope of practice and specialty certifications.
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) administers the primary certification exam for radiologic technologists. The computer-based exam covers patient care, safety, image production, and procedures. ARRT certification is recognized nationwide and required by most states.
While most states require a license or registration for radiologic technologists, approximately 9 states do not. In unlicensed states, ARRT certification is still typically required by employers. Each licensed state sets its own requirements for fees, CE hours, and scope of practice.
Many states require separate fluoroscopy permits for technologists who operate fluoroscopic equipment. Additional modality certifications (CT, MRI, mammography, etc.) may be required or available through ARRT post-primary certification pathways.
