NevadaMusic Therapist License Requirements

Music therapy education requires completion of a bachelor's degree or higher from an AMTA-approved (American Music Therapy Association) program. Coursework includes music theory, clinical foundations, psychology, anatomy, music therapy methods, and research. A minimum of 1,200 hours of clinical training, including a supervised internship at an AMTA-approved clinical training facility, is required before sitting for the CBMT board certification examination. Some states (notably New York and New Jersey) require a master's degree for licensure.

The MT-BC (Music Therapist - Board Certified) credential is awarded by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) and is the nationally recognized professional certification for music therapists. To earn the MT-BC, candidates must complete an AMTA-approved education program, fulfill clinical training requirements (minimum 1,200 hours), and pass the CBMT board certification examination. The MT-BC must be maintained through continuing education (100 recertification credits per 5-year cycle) or re-examination.

The CBMT board certification examination is a computer-based test covering three primary domains: (1) music therapy assessment and treatment planning, (2) music therapy treatment implementation and termination, and (3) professional practice and ethics. The exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions with a scaled passing score determined through psychometric analysis. The exam is administered at Prometric testing centers nationwide. No states currently require a separate state-administered examination beyond the CBMT exam.

Music therapy licensure is a growing area of state regulation. Currently about 15-16 states have enacted specific licensing or registration requirements for music therapists. Regulatory Board

Music therapist licenses must be renewed on schedule with the state licensing authority. State CE requirements typically range from 20-40 hours per renewal cycle and must include music therapy clinical practice topics. In addition to state requirements, the CBMT requires 100 recertification credits per 5-year cycle to maintain the MT-BC credential. CE activities may include attending AMTA conferences, completing approved courses, publishing research, presenting at professional conferences, and supervised clinical practice.
