How to Become an LMFT in WisconsinMarriage & Family Therapist License Requirements (2026)

Prerequisite Courses

Coursework in marriage and family therapy, human development, psychopathology, ethics, research, and clinical practicum

LMFTs must earn a master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a closely related field from a program accredited by COAMFTE (Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education) or a regionally accredited institution. Programs typically include clinical practicum hours in addition to didactic coursework.

Supervisor Qualifications

Board-approved LMFT supervisor or equivalent

LMFT candidates must complete extensive post-degree supervised clinical experience before obtaining full licensure. Most states require between 2,000 and 4,000 hours of supervised clinical work, including a specified number of direct client contact hours. Supervision must be provided by a qualified LMFT supervisor or equivalent licensed professional.

Restricted Activities

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists are qualified to provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families. LMFT licenses must be renewed on schedule with the state board. Most states require continuing education hours that include specific topics such as ethics, cultural competency, domestic violence awareness, and evidence-based practices in marriage and family therapy.

Reciprocity Requirements
