The exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions covering clinical practice, assessment, and ethics. LMFT reciprocity allows out-of-state licensees to obtain licensure through endorsement. Requirements typically include verification of current licensure, equivalent education and supervised experience, and passing any state-specific jurisprudence exams. There is currently no national MFT compact, though efforts are underway in some jurisdictions.
California is the only state that administers its own MFT clinical exam rather than the AMFTRB national exam. The BBS is planning a transition to the AMFTRB exam by January 2027. California also has the largest MFT population in the country.
