North Carolina is one of 4 states with its own exam option. NREMT is optional for initial certification (state exam or NREMT accepted). NREMT is not required for recertification. NC no longer accepts NREMT for reciprocity if initial course was taken in NC. NREMT cognitive exam: CAT format, 70-120 questions EMT, 2hr limit, $104/attempt, scaled score 950/1500, 6 attempts, 15-day wait. Psychomotor exam administered by the state.

Passing Score
State exam fee is $68. If using NREMT: CAT format with 70-120 questions for EMT level, scaled score passing threshold 950/1500, 2-hour time limit, $80 per attempt.
Retake Policy
If using NREMT: up to 6 attempts with 15-day waiting period. After 3rd failed attempt, 24 hours remedial training required. After 6 failed attempts, full course completion required. $80 per attempt.
