Portability Notes
Alabama participates in the Counseling Compact for interstate practice. Endorsement applications also available for out-of-state licensees.
The Counseling Compact is an interstate agreement that allows licensed counselors to practice across state lines. Member states participate in this compact to improve access to mental health services. Endorsement processes for non-compact states vary in their requirements.
Alabama uses the title ALC (Associate Licensed Counselor) for its pre-licensure credential rather than the more common LPC-A designation. The LPC license fee and renewal fee are both $300, which is higher than many states. Alabama only accepts the NCE, not the NCMHCE, for initial licensure.
Alabama requires 60 graduate credit hours in a counseling program.
The NCE is the only accepted national exam; the NCMHCE is not accepted for initial licensure.
3,000 post-master's supervised hours required with at least 1,500 direct client contact hours.
ALC license is required during the supervision period and renews annually at $150.
40 CE hours per 2-year renewal cycle including 6 hours of ethics.
Alabama has enacted the Counseling Compact legislation.
The Counseling Compact went live September 30, 2025, in Arizona and Minnesota, with Ohio joining January 5, 2026. Additional member states are completing technical implementation throughout 2025-2026. Compact membership means the state has passed enabling legislation — check counselingcompact.gov for which states are currently operational and issuing Privileges to Practice.
