Podiatrist — DPM
Podiatrist licensing requires a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree, passing the APMLE, and completing a CPME-approved residency. Surgical scope varies significantly by state — from forefoot-only to full ankle and rearfoot privileges. CME requirements, jurisprudence exams, and prescriptive authority details differ across jurisdictions.

Podiatric licensure involves earning a DPM degree, passing the APMLE, completing residency training, and meeting state-specific requirements including surgical scope and prescriptive authority.
The American Podiatric Medical Licensing Examination (APMLE) consists of three parts covering basic sciences, clinical sciences, and clinical competency. All three parts must be passed for licensure. The NBPME administers the exam, and most states require passage of all parts.
Podiatric surgical scope varies dramatically by state. Some states grant full ankle and rearfoot surgical privileges, while others restrict surgery to the forefoot only. Additional board certification or residency training may expand surgical scope in certain states.
Most states require completion of a CPME-approved podiatric medicine and surgery residency (PMR). Programs are typically 3 years and include comprehensive training in foot and ankle surgery, medicine, and related specialties. Some states accept older 1-2 year programs.
