Music therapy education requires completion of a bachelor's degree or higher from an AMTA-approved (American Music Therapy Association) program. Coursework includes music theory, clinical foundations, psychology, anatomy, music therapy methods, and research. A minimum of 1,200 hours of clinical training, including a supervised internship at an AMTA-approved clinical training facility, is required before sitting for the CBMT board certification examination. Some states (notably New York and New Jersey) require a master's degree for licensure.

The MT-BC (Music Therapist - Board Certified) credential is awarded by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) and is the nationally recognized professional certification for music therapists. To earn the MT-BC, candidates must complete an AMTA-approved education program, fulfill clinical training requirements (minimum 1,200 hours), and pass the CBMT board certification examination. The MT-BC must be maintained through continuing education (100 recertification credits per 5-year cycle) or re-examination.

Music therapy licensure is a growing area of state regulation. Currently about 15-16 states have enacted specific licensing or registration requirements for music therapists. In all states, the MT-BC (Music Therapist - Board Certified) credential from the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) serves as the nationally recognized professional standard. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) actively supports state licensure efforts.

Music therapists use evidence-based music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. The scope of practice includes assessment of client needs through music-based and non-music evaluations, development of treatment plans, implementation of music therapy interventions (including improvisation, receptive music listening, songwriting, lyric analysis, and movement to music), documentation, and evaluation of treatment outcomes. Music therapists work in diverse settings including hospitals, psychiatric facilities, schools, hospice, rehabilitation centers, substance abuse programs, correctional facilities, and private practice.

Music therapy licensure reciprocity varies by state. Because the MT-BC is a nationally recognized credential, music therapists moving between states typically need to verify their CBMT certification, submit transcripts from their AMTA-approved program, and meet any state-specific requirements. There is currently no interstate compact for music therapy, though the national MT-BC credential facilitates portability. States with licensure may require additional documentation including background checks and verification of clinical training hours.
