Maryland accepts out-of-state electrician credentials
Maryland has reciprocal agreements with Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C. Licensees from these states who have held their license in good standing for at least 5 years and passed an exam in their state may apply without taking the Maryland exam.
These are the standard licensing steps in Maryland. As a licensed electrician from Virginia, you may already satisfy some of these requirements.
Register as an Apprentice Electrician with the Maryland State Board of Electricians ($10 fee)
Complete 4 years of experience under a licensed master electrician, OR complete an approved apprenticeship (8,000 hours supervised work + 576 hours pre-licensing education)
Apply for Journeyperson license ($15 application fee) and pass the Journeyperson exam (70 questions, 3.5 hours, 70% passing) — exam waived if apprenticeship completed
Continue gaining experience for a total of 7 years under a licensed master electrician (up to 3 years credit for formal education)
Apply for Master Electrician license ($20 application fee) and pass the Master exam (90 questions, 4 hours, 70% passing) through PSI ($65 exam fee)
Pay $190 license fee after passing the master exam
Obtain $300,000 general liability insurance and $100,000 property damage insurance
Receive Master Electrician license (valid 2 years, biennial renewal)
Timeline varies based on your credentials, reciprocity eligibility, and Maryland's current processing times. Contact the state licensing board for current estimates.
