New Jersey accepts out-of-state electrician credentials
New Jersey does not have formal reciprocity agreements. May accept out-of-state licenses by endorsement; applicants must hold a valid journeyman or master license from another state and may need to pass the state exam.
These are the standard licensing steps in New Jersey. As a licensed electrician from New York, you may already satisfy some of these requirements.
Enroll in a state-approved apprenticeship program and register as a Class A Electrical Apprentice
Complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 576 hours of classroom instruction
Register as a Class A Journeyman Electrician ($40 application fee); no state exam required
Gain additional experience (minimum 5 years total practical experience for contractor license)
Submit Electrical Contractor application to the Board ($100 application fee)
Schedule and pass the two-part PSI exam: Electrical Contracting (Trade) — 100 questions, 260 min — and Business & Law — 50 questions, 130 min (70% passing on each)
Obtain $1,000 surety bond and $300,000 minimum liability insurance
Receive Electrical Contractor Business Permit (valid 3 years, renews March 31st)
Detailed fee breakdown not available.
Timeline varies based on your credentials, reciprocity eligibility, and New Jersey's current processing times. Contact the state licensing board for current estimates.
