Education requirements for substance abuse counselors vary significantly by state. Some states accept a high school diploma with additional training, while others require an associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree. Certification Levels

Many states accept national certifications from the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) or the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC). Some states have their own certification exams. Tiered certification levels are common, with each level requiring additional education, supervised experience, and examination.

Substance abuse counselor candidates must complete supervised clinical experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorders. Requirements vary widely by state, typically ranging from 2,000 to 6,000 hours. Direct service hours (face-to-face client contact) are a required subset of total supervised hours.

Substance abuse counselors provide assessment, treatment planning, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and case management for individuals with substance use disorders.
