Polysomnographic technologist practice involves meeting education requirements, passing the RPSGT examination, and obtaining state licensure where required.
The RPSGT (Registered Polysomnographic Technologist) credential from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is the primary national certification. The exam covers sleep physiology, polysomnographic procedures, scoring and interpretation, pathophysiology, and patient management.
Many states require or prefer graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited polysomnographic technology program. These programs provide comprehensive education in sleep science, polysomnographic techniques, scoring methodology, and supervised clinical experience in accredited sleep centers.
Sleep medicine is a rapidly growing field due to increasing awareness of sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, and narcolepsy. Polysomnographic technologists conduct sleep studies (PSG), CPAP/BiPAP titrations, MSLT, MWT, and split-night studies under physician supervision.
