The Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact (OT Compact) allows OTAs to practice across member states with a compact privilege. Non-compact states may accept out-of-state credentials through endorsement or require a full application.
Alabama requires 20 CE hours per 2-year cycle for OTAs (10 for initial 1-year license). No more than 1/3 of CE hours may come from academic, administrative, or presentation categories. Alabama was the 12th state to enact the OT Compact (2022). Payment must be by cashier's check or money order — no personal checks or cash accepted.
NBCOT certification is required for initial OTA licensure in Alabama but ongoing NBCOT renewal is not required for state license renewal.
OTAs in Alabama must practice under the supervision of a licensed OT.
Continuing education: 20 contact hours per 2-year renewal cycle; initial license requires 10 hours for first year.
No more than one-third of total required CE hours may be academic, administrative, management, supervision of Level II student fieldwork, or presentation hours.
