Elevator mechanic licensure involves completing an apprenticeship program, passing a journeyman examination, meeting ASME A17.1 code requirements, and fulfilling state-specific continuing education obligations.
Most states require a 4-5 year apprenticeship through the IUEC (International Union of Elevator Constructors) or equivalent state-approved program. Training includes classroom instruction in electrical systems, hydraulics, and elevator codes, combined with 8,000-10,000 hours of on-the-job training.
A journeyman examination is required in most licensing states. NAEC (National Association of Elevator Contractors) certification and QEI (Qualified Elevator Inspector) certification through NAESA International are widely recognized. All states that license elevator mechanics reference ASME A17.1.
Licensed elevator mechanics install, maintain, repair, modernize, and inspect elevators, escalators, moving walks, dumbwaiters, and other vertical transportation equipment. QEI certification is typically required for acceptance and periodic inspections.
