Perfusionist licensure involves completing a CAAHEP-accredited perfusion education program, passing the ABCP certification examination, and meeting state-specific licensing requirements where applicable.
The American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) grants the CCP (Certified Clinical Perfusionist) credential after passing a comprehensive examination. Topics include cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO, myocardial protection, pharmacology, and hemodynamics. ABCP certification is the national standard for the profession.
All perfusionists must graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited perfusion education program. Most programs are at the master's level and include didactic coursework in cardiovascular physiology, pharmacology, and coagulation, plus extensive clinical rotations performing cardiopulmonary bypass and other extracorporeal procedures.
Approximately 20 states require state licensure or registration for perfusionists. In all states, perfusionists must work under physician supervision during cardiac surgery, ECMO management, and other extracorporeal circulatory support procedures. There are roughly 4,000 practicing perfusionists nationally.
