Alcohol server certification is regulated at the state level through Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) boards. Requirements range from mandatory statewide programs to fully voluntary training.
About 13 states require all alcohol servers to obtain certification (CA, TX, OR, WA, etc.). Around 10 states require it in certain cities or counties. The rest make certification voluntary, though many employers still require it.
State programs vary: RBS (California), TABC (Texas), MAST (Washington), OLCC (Oregon), BASSET (Illinois). Most are 2-5 hours and available online. They cover ID checking, recognizing intoxication, and state liquor laws.
Certification fees are typically low ($3-$50). Most certifications are valid for 2-5 years and renewed by retaking the course. Utah and Wisconsin offer certifications that never expire. Online training is available in most states.
